  • Details
This is a late 19th-century Victorian crazy quilt, hand-pieced and richly embellished with decorative embroidery, dating to approximately 1885–1905.

The quilt is constructed from a vibrant assortment of period textiles including silk, velvet, satin, wool, and cotton, arranged in classic irregular crazy-quilt fashion. Each block is framed within a light blue jacquard ground and secured with traditional hand-tied yarn knots, a construction method commonly seen in original Victorian examples.

What truly sets this quilt apart are the hand-embroidered figural panels, featuring stitched people, birds, and floral motifs—hallmarks of high-quality Victorian fancywork and storytelling textiles. Decorative stitches throughout include feather stitch, herringbone, cross stitch, and outline embroidery executed in colorful silk threads.

The quilt retains its original dark backing, with ties visible, and has not been altered or modernized.

Condition: Very good antique condition overall, with expected age-related wear to delicate silk fabrics including minor splitting, thinning and shattering in areas due to the addition of metal salts to silks during this era. Embroidery remains largely intact and visually striking. All wear is consistent with a genuine 19th-century textile and does not detract from its display appeal.

A beautiful and expressive survivor from the golden age of American crazy quilting, it is 52 x 65 inches comes from a smoke-free, pet-free home. It is pictured on a queen-size bed.
