  • Details
This unique hand-pieced and hand-quilted Ohio Star quilt dates to the late 19th Century (circa 1890–1900). The blue & cream fabric (late Victorian "Chintz" style) has scalloped, lace-like blue borders with stylized floral motifs inside, both of which are very characteristic of the 1880s and 1890s. The blue is slightly faded and appears to be aged indigo that was used in this roller-printed fabric. The (bubblegum) pink color of the checked fabric was likely achieved using "Turkey Red" dye technology that was diluted and could be leftover garment fabric.

The hand-quilting is tiny, even and in patterns of crosshatch grids and diagonal grids. White quilting thread has been used within the stars while the quilting of the blue fabric is in brown thread which can be seen most clearly on the back.

The back is an tan/oatmeal homespun linen, as is the binding which has been hand-stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is very lightweight.

The quilt is sturdy and the colors remain strong. It is in generally very good condition with fraying of the binding and some fraying/shattering of the blue fabric on the front (see photos) and of the homespun linen on the back on one edge - see photos.
