This is a wonderful antique Crazy Quilt Block Quilt, dated 1906, with charming hand-embroidered motifs and rich early 20th-century fabrics. Unlike the asymmetrical crazy quilts, this quilt is constructed in an organized block setting of pieced diamonds, with each diamond featuring hand embroidery—birds, rabbits, horses, flowers, a horseshoe, a moose, and even a sweet little girl figure—stitched in cheerful outline work.
The dated block “1906” anchors the quilt firmly in the Edwardian era, while the fabrics include velvets, wools, flannels, silks, cottons, and dress fabrics in deep jewel tones, muted greens, browns, blues, and vibrant reds. Seams are embellished with hand-worked embroidery stitches typical of crazy quilt construction.
The backing is a soft paisley print cotton that has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding. Unlike most crazy quilts, this one has batting (light-to-medium weight) and is lightly quilted in black thread in outlines of the blocks.
The quilt is in excellent antique condition with some shattering to a tan silk fabric that is used for some of the triangle patchwork (see photos).
