This is such a great mid-century modern Hexagon Medallion Star Quilt, dating from the 1960s to early 1970s, and in never-used condition. Entirely handmade and hand-quilted, the star is a masterpiece in hexagon piecing -- the entire (giant) star is made from hundreds of hand-pieced and hand-quilted 2-inch hexagons. Outside of the star the hand-quilting is in cross-hatch grids.
It's not just the piecing, but the color stacking that has been expertly done, with layers of very dark set against bright whites and yellows with vibrant floral prints, paisleys, and plaid fabrics in saturated pinks, purples, yellows, and greens also thrown in. Finally, the star is outlined in yellow rickrack. Unique, rickrack embellished shapes are also set at each corner.
The back is yellow cotton that has been turned to the front and machine-stitched to form the binding. The batting is lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent, never-used condition.
