This charming vintage scrap quilt was made during the Depression era, circa 1935–1945, and beautifully reflects the resourcefulness of quiltmakers who used every available fabric scrap. The quilt is constructed from narrow vertical strips of colorful cotton fabrics that include a wonderful mix of ginghams, florals, novelty prints, solids, small floral calicos, red-and-white checks, pastel solids, and playful polka dots. These fabrics were commonly repurposed from feed sacks, household textiles, and clothing and its smaller size suggests it was likely made as a child’s quilt, crib quilt, or utility lap quilt.
The quilt is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted, with hand quilting in a repeating shell pattern. The back is white cotton as is the binding that has been machine-stitched to the front and hand-stitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with some fraying along the binding.
