  • Details
This is a striking and elegant Depression-era quilt showcasing the classic Hearts and Gizzards pattern, executed in luminous green and soft ivory satin. This piece beautifully reflects the period’s fascination with “artificial silk” textiles, most likely rayon satin, prized at the time for its luxurious sheen and fluid drape. The result is a quilt that glows softly in the light, with a silky subtle texture. The quilting is very fine and in precise outlines of the patchwork.

    Fabric & Materials
    • Likely rayon satin (early “artificial silk”)
    • Possible minor silk content in some pieces
    • Distinctive soft sheen and fluid drape
    • Colors: green and ivory

The back is ivory 1930s rayon satin while the binding is green cotton that has been machine-stitched to the front and hand-stitched to the back. The cotton batting is very lightweight.

    • Typical of early rayon textiles:
    • Light surface wrinkling and texture variation
    • Very minor age-related fading/color loss in small section of one patch (see photos)
