This wonderful antique Trip Around the World Quilt is composed of hundreds of squares that radiate outward from the center in the classic Trip Around the World design, creating a striking diamond effect across the entire surface. The fabrics include vivid turkey reds, indigo calicoes, shirtings, plaids, checks, double pinks, lavender checks, dotted prints, and polished cotton dress fabrics.
The quilt is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted. The hand quilting is in an all over diagonal grid. The back is a homespun grey cotton as is the binding that has been machine stitched to the front and hand stitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight.
CONDITION: The quilt is sturdy and in excellent antique condition, but several of the tan fabrics show age-related color variations (see photos) that appear to be due to the color chemistry used in the original dyes. Many 19th century cotton fabrics were dyed using chemical mordants and early synthetic dye formulations that oxidize and react over decades of exposure to air and light, causing uneven color shifts within the fabric, resulting in the type of mottled olive and brown areas that are seen on the tan patches in the photos.
The quilt has been soaked and freshly hand-washed and line-dried, giving a light natural sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
