Vintage 1940s Pumpkin Vine Quilt – Turquoise & White Hand Quilted Antique Quilt – 64” x 83”

Such a beautiful turquoise and white cotton Vintage Pumpkin Vine Quilt dating to the 1940s. The Pumpkin Vine design (also known as Drunkard's Path or Old Maid's Puzzle) is created from repeating curved geometric pieces that interlock across the entire quilt, producing an almost continuous vine-like movement. The simple two-color palette makes the complicated construction especially graphic.

The quilt contains a "humility block" in one corner - a block of noticeably darker blue-green fabric reflecting the traditional idea that handmade work was not intended to achieve absolute mechanical perfection. In other cases, quilters simply incorporated a slightly different piece of fabric because it was what was available. Either way, this small irregularity is a reminder that the piece is handmade.

The quilt is extensively hand quilted, with lovely, precise quilting following the curved piecing as well as closely spaced linear quilting through the white areas. The turquoise border is quilted with diagonal lines. The back is white cotton while the binding is green cotton that has been machine stitched to the front and handstitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight and thin.

CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition. The turquoise remains remarkably strong and vibrant. Please examine all photographs closely, as they are an important part of the description. The quilt has been soaked, freshly hand washed and line dried, giving it a light, natural, sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
