Exquisite Antique Crazy Quilt – Early 1900s – Hand Embroidered Silk & Velvet Patchwork – 69” x 70”

This is an extensively embroidered Antique Crazy Quilt dating to the early 1900s, featuring patches made of velvet, satin, silk and other fabrics. There are more than 100 different embroidery stitches along with motifs like fans, spiders, stars, flowers and unique geometric designs all of which has been foundation pieced.

Several blocks feature particularly interesting designs, including a large blue and pink embroidered fan, geometric patterns, and small embroidered floral motifs. One unusual detail is a beautifully embroidered blue spider, a traditional symbol frequently incorporated into Victorian crazy quilts and associated with good luck and prosperity. Diagonal machine quilting runs across the quilt, securing the layers together.

The fabrics include rich burgundy, navy, black, purple, pink, blue, and cream, with numerous plaids, stripes, florals, and textured fabrics. The quilt is framed with a pink and purple plaid border with a back made of a lovely cream-colored cotton with pink floral sprays and green decorative stripes. The binding is a black cotton print that has been machine stitched to the front and handstitched to the back.

CONDITION: Beautiful antique condition overall. At least one silk patch has shattered, exhibiting the characteristic deterioration associated with antique weighted silks (to which metal salts were unfortunately added by manufacturers in the Victorian era). The remainder of the quilt is in remarkably nice condition for its age, with the colorful fabrics and extensive decorative embroidery largely intact.
