What a wonderful Scrappy Kaleidoscope Quilt, circa 1890-1910. This is a quilt that was made to be used, yet the pattern is delightfully executed in a slightly different way on each block. The hand-quilting is in a repeating shell pattern, except on the two-sided border where the quilting is in diagonal lines.

The back is off-white muslin that on half of the quilt has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding, while on the other half the binding is a red floral that has been machine-stitched to the front and hand-stitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight but because it is also unsized, it has shifted somewhat over time so that in some spots - like along the binding -- it feels a little thicker.

The quilt is in excellent antique condition, with several minor seam separations and, as mentioned above, the shifting of the unsized cotton. The binding also has several spots - the largest of which is 1/4 inch - where there is some beginning fraying.

It has been soaked, hand-washed and line-dried and is clean and soft. It measures 66 inches by 74 inches. From a smoke-free, pet-free home. Shown on a queen-size bed.
