This Garden of Eden Quilt dates to the early 20th century (circa 1905–1920s) and remains in remarkable, never-washed condition. Hand pieced and hand quilted in black thread, the color palette is striking, with rich olive green/tiny yellow prints accented by early browns, indigo blues, and small-scale shirting prints characteristic of the period. The hand-quilting is in a repeating shell pattern.
The back is an antique cotton check in a rich teal-blue and ivory check that has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent, never washed condition, with some fading as can be seen in the photos. Dyes from this era -- especially greens, blues and purples -- were inherently unstable, causing uneven color shifts over time which reflect natural aging rather than use.
This quilt works beautifully as a decorative bed covering, heirloom collection piece, or display quilt and would be equally at home in a farmhouse, country, or traditional interior.
