  • Details
This exceptional late 19th century American quilt, dating to approximately 1875–1895, features a bold hand-appliquéd floral and geometric design framed by period green and yellow sashing. The saturated yet naturally aged color palette includes beautiful chrome yellow/orange, teal blue, cocoa brown, and soft green and is characteristic of late 1800s textile production.

It is entirely hand appliquéd and hand quilted, with very dense and fine echo quilting that has been beautifully executed throughout the quilt.

The quilt is finished with a softly scalloped edge and backed in plain woven cotton typical of 19th-century utility quilts, with a dark brown binding that has been hand-stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is very lightweight.

CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with some fading of the fabrics and some very minor, beginning fraying of the binding in one six-inch portion. PLEASE NOTE: The variation between the lighter and darker tan areas is not a condition issue, but is most likely due to the use when the quilt was made of different fabric lots that originally appeared nearly identical. Subtle differences in bleaching and processing would have been invisible when new, but over 125-150 years the cotton aged and oxidized at different rates. The tonal shifts are inherent to the fabric and not the result of removable staining.
