This is a rare and striking 19th-century Touching Feather Star quilt that has been beautifully preserved. It dates to 1870–1890 and features bold, fully feathered stars that touch point-to-point, a highly skilled and time-consuming layout that has been expertly done. The pattern includes dramatic red/yellow print stars set against a soft white ground with striking green-tiny print accents and a green sawtooth border.
The hand quilting is dense and in feathers along the four-sided border, also in feathers within (on top of) each of the stars and interspersed between the stars. The white open sections are also finely quilted with feather wreaths and diagonal grids.
The back is white cotton as is the binding that has been hand-stitched to both sides. The unsized cotton batting is very lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent antique condition with some fading of the fabrics, one old, hand-stitched patch and several light, age-related, very small toning/tan spots. A few spots on the binding also show signs of minor fraying.
