This exceptional late 19th-century Ocean Waves quilt, dating to circa 1880–1890s, uses a variety of extremely small-scale prints in chrome yellow, double pink, madder red, and warm brown. The hand-quilting is in outlines of the hundreds of 2.5 inch triangles, as well as echo quilting and a beautiful braided rope pattern along the four-sided border. The triangular hand-pieced construction and hand-quilting are very precise and reflect a high level of skill common in late 19th-century presentation quilts.
The back is a madder red flower print combined with a mourning fabric -- black with tiny grey stars. The back has been turned to the front in a very narrow binding that has been hand-stitched to the front. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent antique condition.
