This is a rare antique Mennonite doll quilt, hand-made in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, and made in a rich combination of browns, madder reds, wine reds and black. The hand-quilting is in black thread and forms geometric patterns, flowers, flower bells, and leaves.
Measuring 21” x 22”, this small quilt was likely made as a doll or teaching quilt, a practice known among Mennonite women for instructing young girls in piecing and quilting techniques.
The backing is a plain woven black cotton, with a red cotton binding that has been hand-stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent antique condition with no condition issues noted.
