This exquisite tiny Victorian crazy quilt is a jewel of late 19th-century needlework. Deep crimson velvets, plush burgundy silk, teal and indigo fragments, brocade florals, woven stripes, and ribbon bands are part of this antique Victorian palette. The seams are decorated with feather stitch, herringbone, cross stitch, star motifs, and other period embroidery techniques characteristic of the 1880s–1890s crazy quilt movement.
The quilt was probably originally made as a doll quilt or decorative display piece. The back is black satin that has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding.
The little quilt is in good antique condition for its age with expected silk shattering and fragility consistent with Victorian silk textiles.
