This striking antique red and white LeMoyne Star Quilt, circa 1910-1920s is a beautiful example of early 20th-century American quiltmaking. The quilt features bold eight-point LeMoyne Star blocks arranged with wide sashing and alternating plain blocks. The quilt is distinctive in its use of vivid red striped shirting fabrics.
The star points and accent pieces are made from finely printed cotton stripes in bright red on a white ground. These narrow printed stripes were very popular in the early 1900s for shirts and dress cottons. Because the same stripe fabrics repeat across the quilt, it appears the maker carefully selected commercial yardage rather than relying solely on scrap fabrics, a practice that became more common in the early 20th century when printed cottons were widely available.
The quilt is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted. The hand-quilting includes crosshatching and star-center motifs that echo the block design. The back is white cotton while the binding is red-striped shirting fabric that has been hand-stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with no issues noted.
