This unique and highly graphic folk art quilt dates to the 1940s and features a charming series of storybook-style patchwork blocks. The blocks have been foundation-pieced in mosaics or narrative geometric figures, a rare and technically demanding form of folk art for a quilt. The maker had to translate organic forms like the arch of the cat's back, into a series of straight-line seams and interlocking triangles. The piece is bold, with bright colors, graphic characters and expressive, hand-embroidered faces.
Each block depicts a figure or animal—including children, a horse, giraffe, cat, and geometric forms—rendered in aqua, red, blue, black, and peach. The hand-quilting is in outlines of the neutral patchwork.
The back is aqua cotton while the binding is red cotton that has been machine stitched to the front and hand-stitched to the back. Because the piece has been foundation-pieced, the foundation acts as the only batting (and is a thin inner layer).
CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with no issues noted.
