This is a wonderfully cheerful and inviting Flower Basket Quilt from the late 19th Century. Based on its size and fine construction it was probably made as a "best quilt" that was rarely used and only taken out for rare occasions. It consists of 56 blocks on-point with appliqued baskets of either yellow or red flowers with green stems and the contrasting color baskets (yellow flowers = red basket, red flowers = yellow basket).
The palette is classic: soft, light ground paired with Turkey red prints, small-scale florals, and muted early greens, all consistent with late 19th-century fabric production. The red calico border frames the composition beautifully.
The hand-quilting is especially lovely—delicate, all-over hand quilting with floral and scrolling motifs that add texture without overpowering the appliqué design.
CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent antique condition, in remarkably well-preserved and sturdy condition for a quilt that is more than 130 years old.
