  • Details
This is an exceptional late 19th-century Broken Dishes Quilt, dating to approximately 1875–1895. This bold and striking quilt features classic broken dishes blocks arranged in a grid of deep red and teal sashing. It is constructed from period cottons including early chrome yellow, brown and black printed calicoes, and paisley and geometric prints consistent with late 19th-century production. The white ground fabric retains a soft, unbleached tone, and the quilt appears to be never washed, with colors remaining unusually strong with no laundering wear.

Hand quilting is dense and finely done in very tiny stitches and patterns that include diamond grids and concentric squares. The back is a cream/white cotton while the very very thin binding is navy blue cotton that has been hand-stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is very lightweight.

This quilt is in excellent unused, never washed condition, with some minor tan/toning spots on the back caused by aging (oxidation).
