  • Details
This beautiful and refined late 19th century quilt is a striking example of Victorian-era textile quilting, featuring a Chimney Sweep pattern with beautiful and unusual ribbon-threaded sashing throughout the quilt. Dating to approximately the 1880s–1890s, the quilt combines sophisticated piecing, fine fabrics, hand-quilting and elegant embellishment.

The quilt is constructed from tiny-scale printed cottons, including soft chrome and vegetal greens, creamy shirting-style whites dotted with small red calico dots, and delicate floral vine ribbon framing each block. The hand quilting is very fine, precise and in black thread in triple outlines of each individual block.

The back is a beautiful striped floral chintz while the quilt has been knife-edge finished and hand-stitched closed. The cotton batting is very lightweight.

CONDITION: The quilt is in very good antique condition with scattered areas of toning and age spotting visible on both the front and back, along with fragility and wear to portions of the ribbon sashing. Some areas of the ribbon show thinning, splitting, or wear from age and handling. The quilt nonetheless remains visually stunning and displays beautifully, especially for collectors who appreciate authentic untouched antique textiles with honest age and original character. This is a remarkable decorative quilt with strong visual impact.
