This classic Cathedral Window Quilt was made one "window" at a time and took three years to stitch and assemble, as noted by its maker in an attached label. Unlike traditional pieced quilts, Cathedral Window quilts are created through intricate folded and hand-stitched construction that forms dimensional “window” frames around each tiny fabric square. The result is richly textured, sculptural, and visually striking.
This example glows with hundreds upon hundreds of cheerful 1970s cotton prints in bright oranges, sunny yellows, vivid greens, pinks, blues, florals, ginghams, calicoes, dots, and geometric prints. The workmanship is remarkably patient and precise throughout, especially considering the enormous number of individually folded and stitched units required to complete a quilt of this size.
The original sewn label on the back reads: “This Cathedral Window Quilt was made by Shirley Anderson Jackson. It took 3 years of spare time because I worked. It was made in North East, MD and completed in 1980.”
CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with no issues noted.
