This wonderful scrappy 1920s Pontiac Star Quilt is entirely hand pieced and hand stitched and composed of hundreds of remarkably tiny Pontiac Stars each measuring only about 3 1/2 inches wide. It is sewing machine quilted in straight lines around the blocks.
The scale of the piecing is especially impressive. Each miniature star is formed from tiny scraps of early cotton fabrics carefully stitched together by hand, resulting in a dazzling mosaic-like surface. The maker clearly prioritized use, thrift, and beauty over strict precision, giving the quilt a charming handmade quality. The slightly irregular piecing, puckered texture, and improvisational construction give the quilt a rather soulful personality.
The fabrics are a wonderful study in 1910s-1920s cotton prints and dress fabrics, including plaids, shirtings, feedsack-style prints, geometrics, stripes, florals, solids, and novelty pieces in rich jewel tones mixed with softer pastels. The back is an ivory homespun cotton that has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is unsized and lightweight.
CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with no issues noted.
