This is a striking and beautifully graphic late 19th century Sunburst quilt, entirely hand pieced and hand quilted, dating to approximately 1875–1885. The quilt has repeating red-and-white sunburst medallions floating across an aged ivory ground, with all-over dense shell and wave pattern hand quilting, all of it in black thread.
The fabrics are classic late 19th century cottons, including rich turkey/chrome reds, shirting prints, small geometrics, and soft conversational-style prints typical of the 1870s–1880s period. It also has a four-sided teal border.
The back is off-white cotton that has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding on two sides. On the other two sides the teal border has been turned to the back and hand-stitched to form the binding.
CONDITION: The quilt has obvious fading and gentle age-softening throughout, which gives it a warm, mellow palette and a wonderfully authentic timeworn appearance. See photos.
