This is a beautiful 1930s Depression-era Mohawk Trail Quilt, the very challenging and coveted Mohawk Trail pattern in a rare and beautiful color combination. Composed of dozens of meticulously pieced radiating curved arcs, each tipped in precision-pieced red-and-white sawtooth points and surrounded by a lavender/orchid ground.
It is a very sophisticated solid palette: luminous pastel orchid/lavender ground contrasted against bold turquoise/teal, soft jadeite green, and rich cherry red accents. Every curved seam and delicate triangle has been pieced entirely by hand.
The quilting also shows incredible skill, with very tiny stitches tracing the curved paths and filling the solid lavender fields with concentric fan and arc grids. The back is white cotton while the binding is red cotton that has been machine stitched to the front and handstitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight.
CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition with strong, stable cottons throughout. Fabric colors remain vibrant and clear. Hand stitching is intact with beautiful textured crinkle from gentle historical laundering. Light, natural age toning consistent with authentic 1930s textiles.
