1930s Wreath of Roses Appliqué Quilt – Hand Quilted – Red Green & Tan – 71” x 76”

This is a really lovely circa 1930s Wreath of Roses appliqué quilt with nine large floral wreaths arranged across a crisp white cotton ground, each composed of vivid red flowers and heart-shaped buds, golden yellow accents, tan leaves, and circular green printed vines.

Rather than being invisibly needle-turned, the individual appliqué flowers, leaves and buds are outlined with contrasting decorative cross-stitch/overcast embroidery, giving the motifs wonderful definition and a distinctly handmade appearance. The green wreath fabric is a tiny white-on-green Depression-era print, while the saturated red, green and tan cottons are also consistent with a circa 1930–1940 date.

The quilting is extensive and beautifully executed. Each wreath contains finely hand-quilted floral motifs, while much of the surrounding white ground is filled with dense geometric double-diamond and crosshatched quilting. A narrow tan inner border near the top and bottom of the quilt echoes the tan leaves.

The back is white cotton while the binding is tan cotton that has been machine stitched to the front and handstitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight.

CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition, particularly considering its approximately 90-year age. Please examine all photographs closely, as they form an important part of the description. The quilt has been soaked, hand washed and line dried, giving it a light, natural, sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
