Wonderful and highly graphic American folk art House quilt dating to approximately 1945–1950 and composed of 24 individually pieced house blocks, each assembled from a different combination of colorful vintage cottons. Rather than following a rigid architectural pattern, the maker created irregular houses with exaggerated roofs, chimneys, doorways and windows. No two are quite alike, giving the quilt the spontaneous, individual character.

The fabrics provide a particularly interesting snapshot of the late 1940s and include small-scale florals, blue and yellow florals, blue roses, paisley, gingham, plaid, stripes, tiny geometric prints and several unusual dress and utility cottons. Colors include powder blue, pink, red, turquoise, yellow, lavender, rust, brown, black and white. Several fabrics date a decade or more earlier than the quilt itself, suggesting that the maker was working from an accumulated scrap bag.

The houses are separated by blue sashing with pink cornerstones, while the quilting is by sewing machine and in straight lines spaced about an inch apart, adding to its informal and utilitarian folk-art character. The back is brown cotton that has been turned to the front and machine stitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is thin and lightweight.

CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent vintage condition. Please examine all photographs as they form an important part of the description.
