This is a very sweet early 20th-century Southern Star quilt, dating to 1900–1915, with an lovely assortment of period fabrics, including a number that date to the late 19th century.
The quilt is composed of 36 individual Southern Star blocks, each made in a different cotton fabric, with stars that include deep indigo and navy prints, rich reds, mourning blacks, browns, plaids, stripes, pinks, yellows, blues, small florals, shirtings and tiny geometric prints. Particularly appealing are the old indigo resist-style prints and dark floral cottons, along with several unusual red and black shirtings.
The hand quilting is in a repeating shell pattern in precisely spaced, tiny stitches. The back is another charming period print in pink/red and blue on a light ground while the front cotton has been turned to the back and handstitched to form the binding. The cotton binding is lightweight.
CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent antique condition with the expected variations and some fading of a more than 100-year-old textile. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
