Historic 1927 Biblical Redwork Quilt – Begun at Age 9, Finished at Age 100 – 51” x 72”

There are some quilts that have such a history that it makes me sad that they did not stay with someone in the maker's family, and this is one of those quilts. It's a lovely quilt with a charming history. Begun in 1927 in Washington state when its maker - Edith Allen Countryman was 9 years old and growing up as the daughter of a Methodist minister, the 24 quilt blocks are hand embroidered - very precisely - with each depicting a different Biblical scene.

Ninety years later, she finished the quilt on her 100th birthday on November 28, 2017. In between those dates she graduated from college, married a Methodist minister, had three sons, 10 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

In 2017, Edith assembled the redwork blocks into a finished quilt using a beautiful blue floral cotton sashing, small red floral cornerstones, a narrow red ribbon inner border, and a coordinating blue-and-white floral outer border. The quilt is hand-tied (not quilted) with blue yarn. The back is the same blue-and-white floral cotton as the fabric used for the outer border, as is the binding that has been machine stitched to both sides. The batting is very lightweight.
