  • Details
Beautiful antique Victorian crazy quilt dating to the late 19th century, circa 1890s to early 1900s. This detailed quilt is rich with embroidery on a foundation-pieced variety of silk, satin, velvet, and cotton fabrics arranged in a traditional crazy quilt patchwork. It is signed with two embellished sets of initials: EBW and MEF.

The hand embroidery includes elaborate motifs and at least 40 different decorative stitches along the seams, floral designs, embroidered initials, and charming details. Among them are a beautifully worked fan, flowers, a small embroidered figure seated on a bench, and other designs. Several pieces feature particularly intricate embroidery and decorative embellishments.

The fabrics include deep burgundy and black velvets, jewel-toned satins, patterned silks, and colorful cottons. The back is a vivid orange satin fabric and, like most crazy quilts, it has no batting and has been hand-tied rather than quilted.

CONDITION: The quilt is approximately 125 years old and shows age-related wear, including several shattered silks, a condition commonly encountered in Victorian crazy quilts due to the fact that silks from the era were manufactured with metal salts to add weight (silk was sold by the pound).

Despite these condition issues, the vast majority of the beautiful embroidery and decorative stitching remains intact. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
