Vintage 1970s Nine Patch Quilt – 168 Blocks – King Size Patchwork Quilt – 90” x 103”

This impressive vintage Nine Patch Quilt is made of 168 individually framed patchwork blocks arranged against a white background. Each block is a nine-patch square surrounded by a contrasting cotton frame.

There are dozens of cotton fabrics in shades of blue, teal, green, burgundy, purple, yellow, red, and pink, with both floral and geometric prints. White sashing separates the blocks while a narrow pieced patchwork border surrounds the quilt.

In addition to the extraordinary number of blocks, the quilt is unusual in using two traditional techniques: hand quilting and hand tying, with the ties made of small coordinating embroidery-floss ties securing the centers and adding texture while the hand quilting is steady and precise and includes outlines of the frames and a modified twisted rope pattern in the extensive sashing and four-sided border.

The back is a solid cream-white cotton while the binding is green cotton that has been machine stitched to the back and handstitched to the front. The batting is lightweight.
