Vintage 1940s–1950s Two-Sided String Diamond Quilt – Hand Quilted – 68” x 75”

This colorful Vintage String Diamond quilt, dates to the 1940s and is reversible with each side featuring a completely different patchwork design, making it fully reversible.

One side features rows of string-pieced diamonds constructed from an assortment of vintage cotton fabrics, including florals, plaids, stripes, paisleys, and geometric prints all set against a vibrant orange background and framed by coordinating orange and green borders.

The reverse features large patchwork squares arranged on point, incorporating a variety of vintage cotton prints in shades of brown, navy blue, olive green, yellow, pink, and cream. The fabrics include small-scale florals, paisleys, plaids, and geometric designs characteristic of mid-20th-century textiles. A green-and-white printed border completes this side.

The quilt is hand quilted throughout in outlines of the patchwork on the first side (with the vibrant cheddar ground), with geometric and freeform stitching patterns visible on both sides. The assortment of fabrics suggests the quiltmaker used accumulated scraps, including some dating to earlier decades.

Unlike most traditional quilts, which have a single pieced top and a plain or printed backing, this quilt has two individually pieced sides, each with its own distinct design. The batting is lightweight and thin.
