This vintage Hawaiian quilt, dating to approximately the 1950s–1960s, features a traditional Ponimōʻī (Carnation) appliqué pattern in brilliant scarlet red against a white cotton background. Entirely hand appliquéd and hand quilted, it measures 84” x 84” and displays the intricate symmetry, detailed needlework, and closely spaced echo quilting characteristic of traditional Hawaiian quiltmaking.
The Ponimōʻī design represents the carnation (Dianthus), a flower introduced to Hawaii during the 19th century and subsequently associated with Hawaiian royalty and traditional lei-making. Its Hawaiian name refers to coronation or the crowning of a monarch.
The elaborate floral design incorporates deeply serrated carnation blossoms, elongated leaves, and gracefully branching stems arranged in eightfold radial symmetry. The pattern radiates from a central medallion, traditionally known as the piko, representing the center or life source of the quilt.
The red appliqué follows the traditional Hawaiian technique of folding and cutting a single piece of fabric into a symmetrical design before applying it to the background.
The quilt is extensively hand quilted in the traditional Hawaiian echo-quilting technique known as kuiki lau. Closely spaced rows of stitching follow the contours of the floral design, creating concentric patterns resembling ripples moving across water. The quilting continues throughout the background and into the borders.
CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition, with strong, saturated red coloration and clearly defined appliqué throughout. The cotton has developed the soft texture and gentle surface crinkling characteristic of an older, closely hand-quilted textile. The quilt has been soaked, freshly hand washed in fragrance-free detergent, and line dried outdoors, giving it a light, natural, sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced). Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
