Vintage 1920s Hand Embroidered String Quilt – 270 Scrappy Patchwork Blocks – 67” x 82”

$389.00

  • Details
This is an unusual circa 1920s String Quilt that is made from 270 individually pieced 4.5-inch blocks that have been joined together then elaborately hand embroidered along each of more than 1,000 seams in a technique similar to late Victorian and Edwardian crazy quilts.

The narrow string-pieced fabric strips are arranged in such a way that they create pinwheels, stars, chevrons, and other repeating patterns. The scrappy construction incorporates early 20th-century cotton fabrics, including a pastel palette of lavender, Nile green, butter yellow, bubblegum pink, and baby blue, contrasted with saturated Turkey red and deep crimson.

very seam is embellished with dense featherstitching, also known as brier stitching, worked in a variety of contrasting colors, including cobalt blue, green, lavender, pink, yellow, red, black, and white.

The quilt has been hand quilted in outlines of the 270 blocks. The back is a cream-white cotton muslin that has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
