This colorful handmade sampler quilt, signed and dated 2003, features an assortment of traditional American patchwork patterns arranged in 54 individual blocks. The design combines eight-pointed stars, nine-patch variations, square-in-a-square blocks, and geometric triangle patterns in a lively assortment of cotton fabrics.
An original handwritten fabric label identifies the quilt as the work of Frances Douglas, made for Caleb J. Douglas in 2003.
The fabrics include brilliant cobalt and royal blues, golden yellow, red, coral, forest green, chocolate brown, and cream. Small-scale florals, calicos, novelty prints, and solids are combined throughout, with a particularly attractive beige botanical-print sashing separating the blocks.
It is framed by a narrow golden yellow inner border and a wide, vibrant blue floral outer border. The quilt is lightly hand quilted, with the outline stitching more visible on the reverse.
The back is blue cotton with a tiny floral print that has been turned to the front and machine stitched to form the binding. The batting is lightweight.
