This wonderful antique appliqué quilt is an authentic mid-19th-century Rose of Sharon / Whig Rose variant, dating from 1860–1880 and preserved in pristine, never-washed condition. At an impressive 94 x 95 inches, it offers a dramatic presence suitable for display on a full or queen bed.
The quilt features brilliant double pinks, madder reds, and overdyed greens arranged in large, symmetrical floral medallions. Each rose is constructed with rare pieced geometric centers, a highly skilled and labor-intensive technique seen only in the finest applique quilts of the era. Radiating stems, buds, and tiny blossoms bring dimension and movement to the design.
A striking red sawtooth inner border frames the quilt beautifully, paired with a rich chocolate brown 19th-century floral outer border—a fabric type iconic to the Civil War period. The hand quilting is fine and consistent, including outline quilting and motifs stitched across the open background.
The backing showcases a wonderful striped roller print, characteristic of fabrics imported or produced in the 1860s–1870s, while the four-sided border fabric has been turned to the back and hand-stitched to form a very narrow binding. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
This quilt is in excellent, unused condition and has never been washed, retaining its crisp hand, original surface, unfaded color, and exceptional clarity of fabric detail—an extremely rare state for a 150+ year old textile.
