Antique The Reel Quilt c.1900–1920 – Hand Quilted Maroon & White 60x74

Striking quilt in The Reel pattern, dating to approximately 1900–1920. Note that on some screens the quilt appears pinkish or light red and white, but this is a maroon and off-white quilt.

The quilt is expertly pieced from curved segments that create the distinctive rotational “reel” motion for which this pattern is named. This dynamic layout was favored by skilled quiltmakers and required precise curved piecing throughout. The quilt is pieced in vibrant double-pinks (Turkey-red family) cotton with tiny white polka dots, paired with soft white ground fabric. It is entirely hand pieced and densely hand quilted in double diagonals (a trademark of late 19th century quilts), diamonds and outlines of the patchwork. It also has a classic, four-sided Flying Geese border, with a maroon polka dot outer border.

The back is off-white cotton, while the binding is blue cotton that has been hand-stitched to both sides.

The quilt is in excellent antique condition with age-related fading of the fabrics.
