This exceptional antique quilt dates to the mid-to-late 1930s and features a rare, one-of-a-kind, unique arrangement of radiating stars in a sophisticated and remarkable balance of colors and different size and shape stars.
The fabrics are authentic 1930s cottons that include vibrant chrome pinks, turquoise, aqua, peach, butter yellow, navy, and chocolate brown all set against a soft ivory ground typical of pre-optical-brightener fabrics. The colors remain strong and beautifully preserved. The border is the same beautiful mix of colors, all hand-quilted in diamonds while the body is quilted in outlines of the patchwork and, in some of the open patches, stipple quilted. Stipple quilting is a labor-intensive technique rarely used extensively in Depression-era quilts.
The back is white cotton while the binding is a mix of pink and blue cottons that have been machine stitched to the front and hand-stitched to the back. The cotton batting is unsized and lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with some fading to the fabrics that is most noticeable in the dark blues. The unsized cotton batting has also shifted slightly in some areas.
Measuring a generous 80” x 98”, the quilt is from a smoke-free, pet-free home and is pictured on a queen-size bed.
