This exceptional vintage crazy quilt is handcrafted and signed “Made by Mary S. Rummel – 1942”.
The front is composed of a beautiful combination of silks, velvets, satins, brocades, corduroys and patterned dress fabrics, arranged in classic crazy-quilt fashion. Each irregular patch is hand-joined and outlined with decorative embroidery stitches in contrasting threads. It is hand-tied throughout and has a four-sided red velvet border.
The back is a beautiful satin that is elegant and in wonderful condition. The binding is a satin-based weave and like most crazy quilts this one has no batting. Though it has no batting, the quilt is foundation-pieced, giving it a sturdiness and weight.
The quilt is in excellent vintage condition, with some fraying/fabric loss in the silks and a minor seam separation on the back between the binding and satin back.
