This charming vintage butterfly quilt dates from the 1930s to 1940s and features a cheerful grid of hand-appliquéd butterflies set against crisp white blocks with bold orange/cheddar sashing. Butterflies were a beloved motif of this era, symbolizing renewal and optimism, and this quilt beautifully captures that spirit.
Each butterfly is hand appliquéd using a classic blanket stitch, with dark embroidered outlines and antennae details. The butterflies are a soft yellow floral cotton accented with tiny red, white, and green flowers. The quilt is entirely hand quilted with beautiful and careful stitches in patterns of cross-hatch grids, including along the four-sided border.
The back is bright white cotton while the cheddar fabric from the border is also used for the binding which has been machine stitched to the front and hand-stitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with some fraying of the yellow fabric and a fraying binding.
