This is a stunning, handmade Ohio Star quilt with each star incorporating beautiful chintz fabrics that have endured through more than 125 years. This is a quintessential piece of American folk art, featuring a vibrant pink "shirting" background and an incredible "Flying Geese" (Goose Track) border that frames the quilt.
In addition to the chintz, the quilt showcases a collection of 19th-century textiles, including Indigo discharge prints, chocolate calicos, and mourning prints. Each star center features a large-scale floral chintz or "frocking" fabric. The quilting is in petals, echo quilting and triple-diagonal grids.
The back is a cream/off-white cotton while the very narrow binding is a blue cotton print that has been finely hand-stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent antique condition for its age, with visible fabric "shattering" on several pieces of patchwork where the older dyed cottons have thinned over time (see photos) . The pink fabric is intact and sturdy but has faded in spots (see photos). Finally, the back shows age-related foxing/spots typical of a quilt of this age. Because of its age, it is recommended that the quilt be used for display purposes and not for heavy daily use.
