This is a rarely found and very delightful Depression-era quilt top that features a Dutch Doll (Dutch Girl) motif — a popular 1930s nursery design inspired by European folk costume imagery. During the 1930s, American quilt pattern companies embraced storybook and European folk themes and Dutch-themed designs became especially fashionable, though this particular design is difficult to find in either finished quilts or quilt tops.
Each block in this quilt top depicts: • A profile Dutch girl holding a bouquet of flowers • A long trailing braid • A stylized pointed Dutch cap • Embroidered facial features • Distinctive striped wooden shoes (klompen-style clogs) • Blanket stitch appliqué outlining the dress
The figure is repeated across the quilt in a scrappy variety of feedsack-era prints. It is a quilt top only and has no back, no binding and no batting and needs to be quilted and finished.
The quilt top is in excellent vintage condition with no issues noted.
