  • Details
This is an exquisite 1880-1890s "Thousand Pyramids" scrap quilt featuring hundreds of hand-pieced triangles. Fabrics include:
    • Indigo Prints: Deep navy blues with crisp white discharge prints, including rare novelty motifs like anchors and horseshoes.
    • Mourning Prints: Classic black-and-white geometrics used during periods of Victorian mourning.
    • Turkey Red & Madder: Vibrant reds and earthy "madder" browns that provided the warm pop of color typical of the era.
    • Shirting Prints: Small-scale delicate florals and dots on white backgrounds.

The triangles are hand-pieced and the quilt is hand-quilted with straight-line utility quilting, designed for both beauty and warmth.

The back is a homespun unbleached cotton/muslin that has been turned to the front and machine-stitched to form the binding on three sides. On the fourth side the front fabric has been turned to the back and hand-and-machine-stitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is lightweight.

The quilt is in excellent antique condition especially considering its age of nearly 140 years. There are two small tears to the muslin binding (see photos) and slight fraying of about one inch to the part of the binding that is made of the front fabric. All of the colors remain vibrant, and the fabric is sturdy with minimal wear.
