This is a stunning, hand-pieced Victorian-era Churn Dash Quilt Top, hand-sewn over 120 years ago but never layered, batted, or quilted, leaving the hand-stitching of the original maker visible on the reverse. The top includes a collection of authentic period "scraps," including: • Vibrant Turkey Reds: Deep, colorfast floral prints that have remained remarkably bright for over a century. • Classic Mourning Prints: A beautiful array of black, grey, and deep purple calicos—staples of the 1880s and 1890s. • Victorian "Double Pinks" & Cadet Blues: Charming small-scale geometric and floral shirting prints. • Rich Chocolate & Claret Calicos: Earthy browns and wine-toned fabrics with delicate white "figures" or dots, quintessential to the 1890–1910 era.
The Churn Dash pattern is also known as Monkey Wrench or Hole in the Barn Door, and each block is framed by a beautiful antique charcoal-and-white sprig print background.
CONDITION: This is a QUILT TOP ONLY. It consists of the front layer and has not been layered with batting or a back, nor has it been quilted. It is in remarkable "found" condition, with vibrant colors suggesting it was tucked away in a trunk for decades, protected from light and wear.
Details: • Age: Circa 1880–1910 • Size: 85 inches x 85 inches • Material: 100% Antique Cotton Calico & Percale • Construction: Hand-pieced (visible stitching on reverse)
The quilt top comes from a smoke-free, pet-free home and is pictured on a queen-size bed.
