This striking antique red and white quilt features a bold basket motif with a sawtooth rim, all in vivid red cotton, repeated across a soft white field. Each basket is hand appliquéd and it is hand-quilted in petal wreaths and cross-hatch grids in the body of the quilt and in double diagonals along the four-sided red-striped border.
The quilt dates to the late 19th century (circa 1880–1900), a period when red and white appliqué quilts were especially popular. The Turkey red cotton was widely used in quilts of this era and prized for its rich color and durability.
The back is white cotton that has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form a very narrow binding. The cotton batting is lightweight.
This beautiful quilt is in excellent antique condition with several small seam separations (see photos), one small (less than 1/8 inch round) dot of a discoloration near one edge (see photos) and an even smaller tiny dot on the back. See photos.
