  • Details
This exceptional antique Friendship or Double Bit Axe quilt, dating to the late 19th century (circa 1875–1895), is a striking example of American hand-pieced and hand-quilted textile artistry. The quilt is entirely hand pieced and densely hand quilted in black thread a repeating shell pattern.

Constructed from variety of period cotton shirtings and dress prints, the quilt features deep turkey reds, early indigos, soft fugitive pinks, and classic brown and tan tones that are characteristic of true 1800s fabric production. The border of all four sides is scalloped as it follows the curves of the piecework.

The back is a tan plain weave cotton homespun that has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is unsized and light-to-medium weight.

The quilt is in excellent antique condition with age-related fading of the fabrics.
