This cheerful Depression-era Dolly Madison Star quilt dates to the early–mid 1930s and features vibrant chrome pink stars set against a crisp white background. Each star has a tiny hexagon center made from a charming assortment of vintage scrap fabrics including florals, shirtings, and novelty prints.
The quilt is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted, with delicate hand stitching and simple petal-style quilting motifs that fill the white hexagons and echo the star shapes. The back is white cotton as is the binding that has been machine-stitched to the front and hand-stitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight.
Condition: Due to wear and fabric breakdown in the pink fabric and some fraying and toning on the binding, the quilt is being offered as a cutter quilt. Several areas show holes, thinning, and fading typical of early chrome pink fabrics. See photos. Despite the wear, the quilt remains visually striking and sturdy.
