  • Details
This exceptional vintage Hawaiian quilt, circa 1940s-1950s, is a breathtaking example of the islands' unique textile artistry. It features the iconic Ulu (Breadfruit) motif, hand-rendered in a vibrant, classic "Hawaiian Green" on a soft cream background. In Hawaiian culture, the Ulu is the first pattern a quilter traditionally creates; it symbolizes a life of abundance, growth, and "the bread of life."

Unlike Western patchwork quilts made of many small scraps, Hawaiian quilting is defined by its "snowflake" style—a single, large-scale design cut from a single piece of fabric folded into eighths. This technique creates a seamless, symmetrical flow that radiates from the center, representing the harmony of nature.
    The Craftsmanship:
    • The "Echo" Stitch: Every inch of this quilt is finished with traditional "Echo Quilting" (contour stitching). These rhythmic, hand-stitched waves follow the shape of the Ulu leaves, mimicking the ripples of the Pacific Ocean or the wind moving through the trees.
    • Hand-Appliqué: The intricate Ulu leaves and fruit are expertly hand-appliquéd with nearly invisible stitches, a testament to the maker's patience and skill.
    • Antique Texture: The fabric has a distinctively soft, thin, and buttery hand-feel. This high-quality mid-century cotton (1940s–1950s) has been naturally "broken in" over decades. It possesses a beautiful drape and a comforting, substantial weight without the bulk of modern polyester batting.
    CONDITION:
    • Vintage Character: This piece shows authentic age, including some light yellowing and patina on the cream fabric (visible in photos), which lends it a soulful, lived-in aesthetic. There are no other condition issues.
