  • Details
This Double Wedding Ring quilt is a beautiful example of a true Depression-era scrap quilt, dating to approximately the late 1920s through early 1930s. It is richly pieced with a wide variety of vintage feed sack and dress-weight cotton fabrics with each ring composed of carefully arranged scraps, including florals, polka dots, geometrics, and charming novelty fabrics. The open patches are a very light yellow cotton.

The hand-quilting is in outlines of the patchwork and in floral motifs in the open areas. The back is yellow cotton that has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding. The unsized cotton batting is lightweight.

    Condition: (Cutter Quilt)
    • About 80-85% of the quilt is intact, the rest has areas of fabric loss, especially along the border but also in spots in the body of the quilt (see photos).
    • Exposed batting in places
    • General age-related discoloration
    • The once-bright yellow fabrics on the back and binding have faded significantly and unevenly. Fugitive yellows -- early chrome yellows and aniline yellows (from the mid-19th century through early 20th century) -- are notoriously unstable.
    • The instability of these dyes is evident here - they break down with sunlight, laundering and alkalinity and often (as here) fade unevenly. In some areas they lose nearly all pigment and appear white while in other areas the color remains vibrant and bright.
