This is a unique summer coverlet dating to the 1940s that appears to be a take on the Mary Had a Little Lamb nursery rhyme and features an appliqued "Mary" holding her shepherd's hook, along with appliqued flowers and punch needle (looped pile) lambs with appliqued and embroidered features, all on a light pink ground.
The embroidery is in hand-stitched blanket edging, satin stitches, and delicate French knots. Lightweight and unquilted, this coverlet has finished edges but no batting or backing— apparently made for warm weather or display.
CONDITION: The coverlet is in excellent vintage condition with no issues noted. The punch needle lambs remain fuzzy and intact while the hand-applique is still sturdy and well attached.
